Bluefin Tuna Media Release
Elsipogtog, New Brunswick- Once again New Brunswick Native leaders are calling on the Federal government to respect Aboriginal and Treaty Rights in the bluefin tuna fishery. Last year, New Brunswick’s Mi’kmaq and Maliseet leaders developed an Atlantic Bluefin Tuna fishing plan for Aboriginal fishers that respects the principals of international and federal conservation plans, but the Fisheries and Oceans Minister, Hon. Gail Shea rejected the Aboriginal plan and imposed her department’s plan. In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the annual season for New Brunswick tuna boats opened on September 21st, but closed a few hours later after the quota was significantly overrun.
