Traditional Knowledge Study
Traditional Knowledge Study Underway
The North Shore Micmac District Council (NSMDC) has started interviewing community members for a Traditional Knowledge Study. A team from NSMDC will be going to Buctouche, Eel Ground, Eel River Bar, Elsipogtog, Esgenoopetij, Fort Folly, Indian Island, Metepenagiag and Pabineau to interview hunters, gathers, fishers and Elders to assess the impacts of a proposed cranberry farm on Mi’gmaq lands.
The team made up of Nelson Cloud, Natalie Patles and Virginia Sark started conducting a 108-question survey in the middle of April. The Traditional Knowledge Study will focus on an area near Rogersville where Ocean Spray is setting up a cranberry operation. Some of the drainages involved in the study include the South West Miramichi, Sabbies and Cain Rivers, Salmon Brook, Barnaby River, Black Brook and the upper Kouchibouguac River.
All information collected from the Traditional Knowledge Study will be held in the strictest confidentiality. The information will be used to identify and protect Aboriginal and Treaty Rights as well as well as an educational tool for Mi’gmaq youth.
If you or anyone you know is interested in taking part in the study, please contact Michael Cox, Nelson Cloud, Natalie Patles or Virginia Sark at (506) 627-2730.
